Why Apply for Medicare Colorado Doesn't Have to Be Overwhelming

Colorado Medicare enrollment - apply for medicare colorado

When you apply for Medicare Colorado, you really have just three ways to do it:

• Automatic enrollment if you already collect Social Security

• A quick online form on SSA.gov

• A phone call or visit to Social Security

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) spans 7 months miss it and late-enrollment penalties can follow you for life. The federal rules apply everywhere, but Colorado adds its own twist with local Advantage plans, drug formularies, and provider networks.

I’m Kelsey Mackley of Kelmeg & Associates, Inc., and our team has guided hundreds of Coloradans through this process at no extra cost. Most headaches we see come from two things: waiting until the last minute or not having the right documents ready. Follow the steps in this guide and you’ll avoid both.

Medicare Basics You Need Before Filling Out Any Forms

Think of Medicare as four building blocks:

Part A – hospital care, usually premium-free
Part B – doctor visits & outpatient care, $174.70/mo in 2025
Part C(Medicare Advantage) – private plans that replace A & B and often include drugs and extras
Part D – stand-alone prescription coverage when you keep Original Medicare

Who qualifies in Colorado?

The same federal rules apply:

• Age 65+ and a U.S. resident for 5 years
• Or after 24 months on SSDI
• Immediate eligibility with ALS or End-Stage Renal Disease

If you draw Social Security at least 4 months before 65, you’re auto-enrolled in Parts A and B. Everyone else must actively apply for Medicare Colorado through Social Security.

Staying at work? You can delay Part B without penalty if your employer coverage is “creditable.” Get that confirmation in writing and save it.

When to Apply & Every Deadline That Matters

  1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) – 3 months before your 65th birthday month through 3 months after (7 months total). Sign up early and coverage starts the month you turn 65.
  2. General Enrollment Period (GEP) – Jan 1–Mar 31 annually if you missed the IEP. Coverage begins July 1 and late penalties apply.
  3. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) – triggered by events like losing employer coverage, moving out of your plan area, or certain natural disasters. SEPs let you enroll penalty-free.

Penalties to dodge

Part B – 10 % surcharge for every 12-month delay
Part D – 1 % of the national base premium for each month without creditable drug coverage
• High-earners may also see IRMAA surcharges, but you can appeal if your income drops.
